Wildfire shuts iconic Big Sur destinations
The Timber Fire burning near California’s iconic Big Sur coastline has grown to nearly 5 square miles since Saturday. The fire has forced evacuations at some of Big Sur’s most famous destinations, including the Alila Ventana Big Sur resort, the Post Ranch Inn and Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn. Nepenthe restaurant and the Henry Miller Memorial Library have also been closed. All state parks in Big Sur are closed, including Point Sur State Historic Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. As of Tuesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said Highway 1 was closed between the Fernwood Resort to the north and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Vista Point (Mile post marker 37) to the south.

How West wildfires can spawn 2,000-degree firenadoes
Wildfires can spawn their own weather, including tornadoes. During the West wildfire season, new firenadoes could form from any of these fires. The most extreme firenado reported was the Carr Fire’s firenado in 2018, which saw EF3 winds and temperatures over 2,000 degrees.

What I Love About Working for The Weather Company

What I love most about working here is the amazing people. I get to work with a team that’s supportive, talented and genuinely fun to be around. It’s like being part of a community, not just a workplace, and that makes every day enjoyable.

Favorite Core Weather Memory

Growing up in Savannah, Georgia, we had our fair share of hurricane warnings, intense thunderstorms and lightning that lit up the sky. Summers were always hot and humid, with muggy nights and thick air. But the weather that really sticks in my memory is the rare occasion when it would snow. Schools would close and kids would run outside, bundled up in mismatched layers. But as much as I loved those rare snow days, autumn weather was always my favorite. I still love opening all the windows in my house, letting the crisp breeze flow through. It’s a simple joy, but for me, fall weather is a reminder of how a perfectly cool breeze can relax both the body and the mind.
