This winter was a struggle: frizzy hair with abnormally dry ends, breakage and oily scalp. I had been at my wits end trying to figure out what was causing the issues. Is it my shampoo and conditioner, styling products, air quality or even my bedding?

After investing in silk pillowcases and a really nice hair oil, my hair is finally on the mend. It may seem unusual if you’re used to your regular cotton pillowcases, but swapping to silk pillowcases (and bonnets) could really benefit your hair type.

If you’ve been struggling and are looking to make a few changes, here's how a silk pillowcase could potentially help improve your hair, skin and sleep quality, as well as a few top selling silk pillowcase options.

Benefits Of Silk Pillowcases

Good sleep practices start with your bedding, and there’s a reason why luxury bedding options have exploded in recent years.

1. Gentle On Your Hair

The smooth texture of the fabric causes less friction against your hair cuticles – coarser fabrics (like cotton or linen) can snag your hair as you sleep. Reduced friction may help with less tangling, frizziness and breakage, especially for those with curly, natural or hair prone to tangling. And for those with bleached, dyed or chemically treated hair, a smooth surface could be a much-needed essential to help restore some of your strands' silkiness.

2. Moisture Retention

Silk fabrics may contain trace amounts of sericin, a natural protein from silkworms, that form a smooth film on the skin’s surface to prevent moisture loss. Natural silk fibers repel moisture more effectively than other fibers. This will be beneficial to your nighttime skincare routine.

3. Allergy Relief

In addition to moisture retention, silk pillowcase companies claim they are hypoallergenic, and are supposed to help repel dust, dust mites and mold. It’s also much softer on your skin, so if you suffer from eczema or other skin issues, silk pillowcases could also help prevent flare ups.

It’s important to note, however, that a silk pillowcase should be cleaned just as often as a regular pillowcase. If you suffer from bad allergies, we suggest getting a pillow protector specifically designed for allergens.

4. Temperature Control

In spring and summer, I tend to get hot and a little sweaty depending on my bedding quality. Silk pillowcases are moisture-repellent and breathable, and the fabric design will help you 'keep your cool' even during blazing summer nights.

What To Avoid

When selecting the right silk pillowcase for your needs, here are a few tips to keep in mind as you’re shopping.

  1. Make sure it’s made of pure 100% mulberry silk, which is a strong and smooth type of silk (think the Egyptian cotton of silk fabrics, according to Casper).
  2. Avoid silk options that include other synthetic blends.
  3. Avoid options that do not meet or mention any certification regarding chemical safety.
  4. Avoid options that do not state the momme count. Look for a high momme count (ideally 22+ mm). Momme measures the silk density and weight, and the higher the number, the better the quality. The average silk pillowcase ranges between 19 to 22 momme.
  5. If you see a grading scale (A, B, and C) in the description of the silk pillowcase, it references a different type of quality. A is the best quality, with C being lowest. If you see a product listed as 6A, it typically represents the highest quality of that specific silk that you can buy.

Thanks to a question from one of our readers, we also wanted to add in a quick caveat on washing and longevity. According to Blissy (one of our top picks below), a good mulberry silk pillowcase should last you anywhere between two to five years, depending on silk quality and care.

For best care tips, hand washing is most preferred, but a delicate cycle in a mesh laundry bag can also do the trick. Be sure to wash in cold water. Do not twist or wring it once it's washed, and lay flat or hang to air dry.
